Mascots can have many different types of appeal to many different people. Sometimes, their image can represent what is the best about an organization and, sometimes, it can represent what people like about the organization the best. These images are often born of the imagination of someone who has an attachment to the entity that is behind it. They are usually meant to leave people with a good feeling.

Many people look for a way to identify with a school when they are new. Sometimes, it can simply be a matter of wanting to fit into a different environment. At other times, it could be a desire to support the spirit of a place and begin a lasting attachment to an institution. Being able to identify with a certain symbol that represents a place can, often, allow for a smooth transition.

Fans of sports teams of various types will, often, want to display their loyalty. By honing in on the object that represents the team, fans can boost the crowd and create enthusiasm. They can do it in ways such as drawing the object on their bodies or even wearing the image of it as a face mask.

Sometimes, some superstitions can be behind the images of team characters. Some teams will not start play until their character has performed a certain ritual for the audience. Even though most people will know that the ritual is all for show, most people will still enjoy participating in it anyway as a way to be a receiver of the overall feeling of goodwill or power that it may bring.

Attaching a character to a business or corporation can help to give it name recognition. The character is chosen carefully by a company's public relations department and is usually used to make known a particular feature of a company. Of course, this image should, likely, be something that is, generally, not offensive to anyone.

People, often, like images that are fun and that they can share with others. Not surprisingly, the image does not have to be an actual real creature. The idea of having a symbol for representation is simply that--for symbolic purposes. The image does not replace the actual entity behind it, yet, it can somehow make the entity more attainable for more individuals.

Fictional characters, often, capture the imagination of children. Parents, sometimes, like to see pictures that make their children feel more comfortable when first attending a new school or activity place. The image that the organization chooses can say a lot about their desire to bring new people into the group.

Overall, mascots can have many purposes and meanings under various settings. Most of the time, they are meant to be something that draws people in and makes them want to join in. However, they can also be used for other purposes, as well. There are great ways to create new images by checking out online sources.
