Slip And Fall Accidents Are Common

No matter how careful a person tries to be, accidents happen. Every day there are slip and fall accidents at home, work, or other areas. Even though these incidents are common, there are long lasting consequences if not handled correctly.

Work is a common place for incidents to occur. One of the most common reasons for these types of incidents is simply lack of awareness. When a custodial staff is mopping an area, for example, they usually place signs that state there is a wet floor. Unfortunately, most people simply are not aware of the signs and walk right past them. When a person hits a wet floor in shoes that are slick, the individual usually lands on his or her backside.

When on the floor, the employee usually tries to hide the fact by getting up quickly. It is obviously embarrassing for someone to witness an incident, but it is important to follow procedure and fill out the needed documentation. When an incident happens, there are often aches and pains that happen well after the initial problem. Without proper documentation it can be difficult to get the medical care needed.

A swimming pool is another location that frequently has incidents. Even though there are always signs posted that inform members of the slick area around the pool, every year there are problems. Even individuals who abide by all of the safety precautions can find themselves flat on the ground. Public swimming pools should have official paperwork that must be filled out, as well. Sometimes injuries may require medical attention immediately. If this is the case, stay calm and give the staff all of the information regarding what happened.

Slip and fall accidents are most common on stairs. Stairwells are dangerous simply because of their purpose. Outside stair cases are more likely to have problems due to weather such as ice, snow, and rain. The handrails are on stairs to try and add additional security, however, incidents still happen.

Stairs become quite slick in the rain. Even if there are grip strips on the treads of the stairs, a person can easily have their foot slide off. The majority of incidents on stairs occur when a person is descending them. Once the foot misses the step, there are major issues that can occur. Head first falls are the most worrisome. However, landing on one's back and tailbone is equally painful and difficult to remedy.

The pain associated with slip and fall accidents can be a major setback. While broken bones are unlikely, nerve damage to the back or spine are quite common. Of course, any landing on the head is concern for hairline fractures, contusions, and swelling. Even if the incident does not have immediate consequences, it is important to stay alert to any possible problems.

Because slip and fall accidents are among the top five in work place injuries, it is vitally important to be aware of surroundings. If it does occur, make sure that it is handled according to the guidelines. Nothing is worse than not being able to get proper attention due to lack of follow through. By following safety precautions and protocol, incidents such as these do not have to end in pain.
