Small pieces of paper that contain information about an individual or company are called business cards. These are usually exchanged during interactions between potential clients or partners because they are convenient and serve as a memory aid. Generally they include basic information such as contact information, name, logo, and company. A card may be simple, containing black text on white stock paper, or more design oriented with colors and shapes. There are people who collect cards that are celebrity, antique, or just unusual.

Most of these product are printed on standard card stock. Visuals, printing technique and cost tend to vary. Advancements in batch and digital printing have made full-color printing more cost effective. Thermography is an inexpensive process of printing that allows for a raised print effect. Full color prints may be done using sheet-fed presses and the four-color method for printing. A coating of UV gloss is another option that can add to the design of a card.

Some are made from plastic, specifically translucent, crystal clear, metallic, or white plastic. Other materials that may be used for construction: rubber, magnets, metal, wooden nickels, poker chips, and real wood. Using different materials is a way to grab the attention of potential clients.

There are printing shops that can mass-produce these products. They can even be printed at home, using a special card software or online program. Software usually allows individuals to customize the design, layout, and text of the card. The final product can be printed from a home printer, if card stock is available, or sent to a print shop.

Another option for getting these products is using a web-to-print application. There are several printing firms with websites that allow customers to choose and customize a design template, adding in logos, imagery and other features select their quantity, view pricing options, and request delivery. The company will produce and ship the finished product. Usually these companies also offer customized labels, notepads, pens, bags, t-shirts, letterheads, and other accessories.

Essentially, these pieces of paper are small advertisements of an individual or a company. Because of this, they may include more than contact information. Some businesses choose to list their services, or include a summary about themselves. It is important that a card contains enough information that it can properly serve as a memory aid and remind an individual. These items may be given out at formal gatherings, or placed in a business for clients to take and share.

Compact disc cards are a new form of this business tool. These devices are electronic discs that hold up to 100 MB of data. They may be round, square, or oblong, but are usually the same size as a traditional card and are designed to fit inside of a standard CD-ROM drive on a computer. The discs are capable of holding a lot of information, such as portfolios and presentations. Still, this new technology is not as widely-used as traditional paper cards.

Business cards are a way to share contact information and services with potential clients or business partners. The small pieces of paper can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are sometimes made from unconventional materials. Typically these products include, at the very least, the name of the person, their company, and some form of contact information.
