It is not difficult learning how to reduce your energy bills this winter by draught proofing your home.Currents of cold air enter through openings to the outdoors from the inside of the home. The repeated heating of the cold air entering the house raises the heating bill very quickly. Taking the time to find these leaky areas and blocking the incoming draught will make a noticeable improvement in your energy bills.

You can light a match and blow out the flame to follow the trail of smoke or just light up an incense stick. The smoke will be pulled by the drafty air to the location of the opening. When the air is colder outside than inside you will feel the source of cold more easily.

One place where draughts come in is through the door area. Caulking will help seal draughty areas around the door frame. Often the frame will work itself away from the wall creating an open space to the outdoors. Painters' tape should be applied first about one quarter of an inch away from the door frame. The caulking is run over the top of the tape with any excess material wiped off. The tape is then pulled off to reveal a neat caulking line.

Door areas can also have some stick on door tape applied where there are spaces at the side of the doors that can be covered. Door thresholds are also areas that have wide gaps. A new all weather threshold can be installed in order to take care of this problem. The old inefficient threshold needs to be removed first. A new door sweep will need to be placed at the bottom of the door also.

Light switch outlets are notorious areas for draughts. Placing a universal gasket behind them will significantly block draughts. One just needs to unscrew the switch plate and place the foam gasket behind the plate.

The area where the washer and dryer are connected in the wall is another draught-prone spot. One can purchase a bottle of expanding foam that is applied into the area where the dryer connects to the exterior wall. It is a good idea to work with gloves and a damp rag to wipe off excess foam since it will expand significantly.

Going online to learn more about how to reduce energy bills this winter by draught proofing the home is time well spent. The warm season will soon be over and the cool fall breezes help in detecting sources of draughts. The money that you will save will be significant.
