Training courses available for young carpenters in the USA offer specialized instruction to aspiring and new carpenters. Formal schooling increases his chances of being hired and promoted in building trades.

Several possibilities exist for furthering education in this field. On the job carpenter's assistant instruction is obtainable, if the applicant can get hired without previous experience. With this option the new worker can earn while he learns.

The employer will expect productivity, however, and may be more interested in getting a return on his investment than providing an education, especially when the new worker may take those skills to another employer. Once certain skills are learned, the carpenter may get assigned the same work repeatedly rather than being taught additional skills. Gaps in skills can result, even after long periods.

Limited numbers of formal apprenticeship programs are obtainable through some employers and unions. These are difficult to obtain and typically last three to four years, until the apprentice becomes a journeyman. The third choice is classroom or online coursework through vocational schools or technical colleges.

A complete program can be expected to give basic skills needed for typical construction projects. The first skill is an ability to read floor plans, blueprints, or technical plans. Second is skills in measuring dimensions, laying out materials, and marking them, while insuring compliance with local building codes.

Third is an ability to accurately cut materials into specified sizes and shapes with hand or power tools. Fourth is knowing how to join materials with screws, nails, and adhesives. Fifth is being able to check the work for accuracy using squares, rules, levels, plumb bobs or surveying equipment. Sixth is being able to make any necessary adjustments to make the work compliant with the plan and suitable for its intended use.
